Freefall Experience - Design Ideas Competition
National Arboretum Canberra
CONCEPT
Engineering + is a flexible performance exhibition space that provides Engineers Australia with a platform to promote specific engineering innovations and achievements, commencing with the centenary of Engineers Australia in 2019.
Situated at the gateway to the ‘Freefall Forest’, Engineering + will provide a lasting legacy as well as a future-proofing opportunity to the Institute. The creation of a space that allows for a changing program of installations and exhibition material will provide an invaluable marketing and promotional tool to Engineers Australia. Partnering with local artists and designers, each exhibition finds a unique and creative way to showcase engineering achievements to all visitors to the National Arboretum. Interactive displays inspire the next generation of young Engineers, while demonstrating the innovative abilities of established Australian Engineers to Commonwealth decision-makers and international dignitaries.
SAMPLE EXHIBITIONS
+BLOOM
The BLOOM exhibition celebrates the achievements of bio-molecular, agricultural and environmental engineers. A series of expanded thermoplastic polymer sheet and mouldable bio-composite fibres create a ‘bubble-like’ domed roof structure. Along the walk a series of interactive displays showcase the achievements of each field.
+ NETWORK
The NETWORK exhibition highlights the complexity and ingenuity of systems engineers through a series of colourful woven natural fibre composites interlaced throughout the Freefall Forest.
+ SPARK
The SPARK exhibition showcases the creativity of lighting and electrical engineers through a complex multi-strata LED lighting display. This interactive exhibition is programmed for use in conjunction with theatrical and musical performances, while interactive ‘nodes’ trigger a pulse of light when visitors engage with the structure.
