In 2017, the Boundless playground was extended to include a sensory garden, a nature play space, a large slide and picnic area, as well as some bright and fun 'cut-out' panels by Delene designs.
Sensory Garden
The entrance to the sensory garden is through a climber-covered archway, into a space that has something for everyone. Intended as a retreat away from the higher intensity play equipment within the existing boundless playground, the space caters to children and adults looking for sensory stimulation of all kinds. At the ground plane is a tactile surfaces wheel comprised of 'haptic' play elements including soft, firm, pebbly, tiled, natural, artificial and coloured materials, providing a range of tactile experiences for all ages. At the centre of this wheel are two 'small worlds' sculptures by Wellspring Environmental Arts and Design; delicately carved boulders reminiscent of sand castles and caves for unthinkably tiny creatures.
A colourful and patterned cubby house with circular apertures overlooks the sensory garden and provides a sense of respite and enclosure for contemplative reflection. Timber balance beams adjacent to a row of mirror panels encourage the use of motor skills such as balance and coordination with the added visual stimulation of one's mirrored reflection. A sequence of multi-coloured poles provide visual stimulus and reflect the boundless colour scheme. The metalophone and a series of chimes add a musical element to this play space providing an interactive and shared style of play for parents and kids. Also throughout this play space is a generous amount of planting that will soften and change the nature of this space as it matures.
Nature play space
The nature play space is nestled under large existing Eucalypts and is accessed via a stone stepping path. A mixture of timber play elements including cut logs and a log cluster in addition to the existing natural resources provides kids with the opportunity to interact with the space on their own terms. It is a non-prescriptive type of play encouraging creativity and imagination.
Slide
The giant slide is hugely popular to kids and adults of all ages. The slide accommodates several willing participants at once with various ways of getting to the top of the slide ranging from a meandering path, to a climbable rubber soft fall slope with grips to a climbable rock bank, creating an endless circuit of continuous play. Grandparents, mums, dads, babies, and kids can slide down altogether, in tandem or side by side, providing an opportunity for independent or shared play in a safe environment. Additional shade structures and deciduous trees will provide ample shade throughout the hotter months.
