National Gallery of Australia Ouroboros

November 2022 - October 2024

Client: National Gallery of Australia

Design brief

Landscape design to support Ouroboros, a major new sculpture by Lindy Lee, commissioned to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the National Gallery of Australia.

The design was developed in deep consultation with Ngunnawal Elders and reflects a strong connection to Country, integrating cultural values, local materials, and an Indigenous planting palette. Boulders were sourced from Ngunnawal land and the Wee Jasper quarry, and seating was crafted from recycled timber by local artisans.

Universal access was a key driver, ensuring the space is inclusive and welcoming to all visitors.

The project also incorporates future-proofed infrastructure—provision of data, power, and lighting to enable ongoing programming and future sculptural installations as part of the Sculpture Garden redevelopment.
